We recommend you read the designers bio carefully before making your purchase.<<back [[Back|auction>
Emile Pingat
Emile Pingat (1820 - 1901) belonged to Parisian fashion elite of the 19th century. By the 1880s, he became heavily known for his elaborate and luxurious outerwear, including coats, jackets, dolmans and other types of outerwear for cold days. Pingat's artistic talent was recognised beyond France, with his works being regarded highly by both European and American clientele. By the second half of the 19th century large numbers of American women set out to Paris to order their outlandish outfits. Prominent patterns, dark palette, heavy fabrics and an interest in foreign cultures are all distinct of Pingat's style. Despite his talent and popularity, Pingat's name is rarely recognised by the contemporary society. After selling his business in August 1896, his name virtually disappeared from the fashion world.

Charles Frederick Worth
Active between (1846-1895) the English fashion designer Charles Frederick Worth is often regarded as the father of Parisian haute couture. In 1845 Worth left London for Paris where he pioneered a unique dressmaking technique which involved the use of awe-inspiring but practical crinolines, reflecting the glamour of 19th century. Seen as one of the biggest fashion makers and international style trendsetters of his time, his dresses were described in fashion magazines as “pompous” and “showy”. Worth became quickly known among his clientele for his extravagant evening wear and court dresses. He is said to have created 250 dresses for Napoleon III wife Empress Eugénie for her appearances in 1868 as well as designed gowns for the wife of one of the great American bankers of the 19th century, J.P. Morgan, Jr.

Jeanne Hallée
Jeanne Hallée (1870-1914) was during the Belle Époque regarded as one of the most important French fashion designers of the day, with her specialty being lace and chiffon applique. Hallée's style was often described as subtle and conservative yet tasteful and proportionate with classical and Renaissance references which indeed attracted international clientele, especially foreign aristocrats and wealthy American women. Summarised by the press of the time as “quiet and distinguished, combined with exquisite refinement in details”, her garments rich in colour and material were frequently worn by women at formal social events and cultural gatherings. Despite her reputation as “one of the best of the early houses” for womenswear, her female-led fashion maison has become forgotten today.

The Islamic iconography represented here in the appliqués shows Pingat's knowledge and interest in Eastern cultures. His couture mix of the European aesthetic and cross-cultural detailing makes his work distinctly memorable. This mantle was designed with the shorter panel in the back to accommodate the skirt styles at the end of the century, which still had some fullness left over from the bustle silhouette of the previous decade.

This cape mimics that silhouette, allowing the wearer to maintain the shape created by her dress underneath. The rich color of the royal blue velvet is evocative of the original wearer who at that point in time would have been seen as a precious jewel who required continual attention and assistance. Pingat's treatment of the trim completes the luxurious quality of the garment with a liberal application of guipure lace in vertical lines emphasizing the statuesque, but somewhat removed, appearance of the wearer.

By the 1890s, Worth was using large-sized ornament and was increasing simplifying his silhouette. He created this dress by separating zones of monumental schematic roses with highly stylized bands of rose leaves and sprigs. Worth's rose thus became graphic design, neither botany nor keepsake. The rose's popularity reached an apogee in 1899 with the formation of the American Rose Society.

Worth's black roses suggest the melancholy and wistful world of poets Charles Baudelaire and Algernon Charles Swinburne. While less innovative than his famous father, who is known for establishing the standards and practices of the haute couture, Jean Philippe Worth nonetheless was technically proficient and, in this example, demonstrates that he knew the dramatic reading of a textile in black and white.
